Attempt at Improving Education Gets "Muddied"

SF 2033, coined "Race to the Top", must be passed before the weekend to ensure Iowa is eligible to apply for federal monies to help struggling Iowa schools.  In addition to helping improve Iowa schools, a new section was added to the federal requirements stating the teachers' union must be at the table as the school board and administrators develop their improvement plans.  If the bargaining unit could not reach agreement with the superintendent/school board, a mediator would be brought in to negotiate. Due to the tight timeline given to Iowa from Washington, the bill debated by the Senate Wednesday must be signed into law before Tuesday, January 19th.  Martin Luther King Jr. Day precludes legislators from working on Monday, therefore the "Race to the Top" legislation must be passed by the Iowa House before the weekend.  The Iowa House is scheduled to debate the bill Friday and several amendments are expected. Save the Date!

The ABI Day on the Hill will be held on Wednesday, March 10 at the Iowa Historical Building.  With the shortened session, it's important to keep in touch with legislators and tell them of any concerns you have with proposed legislation.  The ABI Day on the Hill is a great opportunity to meet in person with legislators and talk to them about issues of importance to your business.

Many know that marketing, particularly at the cusp of the upturn, can shift the advantage of market leadership to their businesses.

Ever since the Great Depression, research studies have proven this point. The studies illustrate a concept called 'the culminating point'-the point in a conflict at which the advantage switches irreversibly toward one entity over others.

  • In the 1930s, IBM flourished while the nation floundered, It chose to focus on retaining its workers and culture, launching products and investing in engineering, research and development.
  • It held IBM Day in New York and California-a major marketing investment in a dire time.
  • With recovery, IBM emerged as the industry leader, a position it's retained for decades. Continue reading>>>
