Tax Credit Legislation Progresses

On Monday, both the Senate and House Ways and Means Committees considered and approved the proud tax credit legislation introduced late last week.  The bills were approved on party-line votes in both committees. SF 2380 was taken up by the full Senate Wednesday afternoon and passed on party line vote 32-18.  The bill could be taken up in the House as soon as Thursday afternoon.

Labor Bill Update

As reported, HF 2420 which violates Iowa's Right to Work law by allowing state unions to take up to 75% of union dues from the paychecks of non-members, was referred to the House Ways and Means committee last week.  This procedural move keeps the issue alive for the duration of the 2010 legislative session.  ABI has learned that Governor Chet Culver is actively seeking support for the measure so we will stay vigilant to make sure that this bill doesn't emerge in a secret deal at the 11th hour of session.  Click here to hear ABI's newest radio commercial airing statewide to protect Iowa's right to work freedom.

Candidate Filing Deadline

Friday, March 19 is the nomination petition filing deadline for state candidates wishing to appear on the June 2 Primary Election Ballot.  A complete list of legislative retirements will be known following Friday's deadline, but thus far ABI has learned of at least three Senate retirements including Senator Ron Wieck (R-Sioux City); Senator Roger Stewart (D-Preston) and Senator Steve Warnstadt (D-Sioux City).

IIPAC Expects to Be Active in 2010

With the number of legislative retirements, open seats create great opportunities for pro-business legislators to run and win election to the Iowa House or Senate.  ABI's political action committee (Iowa Industry PAC) will begin its scrutiny of voting records, surveys and interviews of candidates immediately following adjournment of the session.  Your personal investment in IIPAC can make all the difference. Click here to join hundreds of ABI members who invest in their own economic future by supporting IIPAC.

ABI members are invited to show their support for Project Lead the Way (PLTW) on Tuesday, March 23rd from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a legislative showcase in the Iowa State Capitol Rotunda.

The purpose of the event is to demonstrate to Iowa's Legislators how secondary education, higher education, business, state agencies and PLTW have partnered together to create a system to implement and sustain this dynamic educational initiative.  PLTW students from across the state who are enrolled in PLTW will be displaying their engineering notebooks, portfolios and projects around the Capitol Rotunda and exemplify the relationship between the projects they have designed and the math, science and technology they applied within the design process.
