General Assembly Adjournment in Light of Day-

ABI Priorities Protected

The Iowa Legislature officially adjourned on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 12:48 p.m. in the middle of the day, a week after the Standings Appropriations bill was first introduced.  Despite several attacks on Iowa businesses and the state's business climate, ABI's top priorities were successfully defended.  Iowa remains a Right to Work state and businesses still maintain oversight of medical care in workers' compensation.  This special edition of The Voice of Iowa Business contains a brief summary of the final outcome of bills of interest to Iowa employers.  A complete summary will soon be accessible on ABI's website. HF 2420- Guts Iowa's Right to Work law by allowing unions to collect fees from non-members

 

HF 795/SF 155 - Denies employers any oversight of medical care and treatment for workplace injuries, allows employees to randomly select care at employer's expense

 

HF 758 - Creates new claim for damages in wrongful death case for "loss of enjoyment of life"

 

HF 807 - Repeals federal deductibility of federal income tax on Iowa returns

 

HSB 652/SSB 3042 - Coupling of federal Internal Revenue Code for research development credits and depreciation

Key Bills That DID Pass

HF 681 - Iowa WARN Act- requiring employers with more than 25 employees to provide 30-day notice of mass layoffs or business closing. Civil penalties

 

HF 2110 - Allows spouses of military personnel who voluntarily quit eligible for unemployment benefits to be paid out of Iowa's unemployment trust fund

 

HF 2197 - Requires employers provide paid or unpaid day off for veterans on Veterans Day

 

HF 2485 - Chapter 20 public employees bargaining code changes.  The legislation was non-controversial and no amendments were offered to allow open scope bargaining which passed in 2008 Continue reading>>>
