Vigilance
on Work Comp
Needed
There
have been rumblings this week that labor leaders
are pushing legislators to make another charge
at HF
795 and SF
155, the bills that turn Iowa's workers'
comp system upside down by denying employers any
oversight of medical care and treatment.

House
May Debate Tax Bill
Friday
After
delaying the controversial tax proposal
originally scheduled for debate Thursday, House
Leaders have indicated they're making some
revisions to HF
807 for possible debate on Friday. The
Senate has adjourned until Monday, so a rush to
get the bill to the Governor this week won't
happen as originally
planned. Continue

Mandate
Considered for
Biodiesel SF
464 mandates that all diesel fuel in Iowa
contain a 5% blend of biodiesel. It's
estimated this would inflate the costs of diesel
fuel by 7 cents per gallon. In 2007, over
712 million gallons were sold, so this mandate
equates to $50 million in increased
transportation costs for Iowa companies
operating diesel
trucks. Days are
Numbered-Threats
Remain Although
the legislature is focusing on balancing a
budget and closing down for the year, the
threats of anti-business bills remain.
Proposals that would repeal Iowa's Right to Work
law, upset the apple cart on workers'
compensation, price fix for public construction,
take away local elected officials'
responsibility and place decisions in the hands
of unelected arbitrators, and increase taxes on
small business all remain viable threats in the
remaining days. Continue

Much
Happening at ABI; Get the Most out of Your
Membership
As
always, there is a lot taking place at
ABI. While things are busy, I feel it is
important to let you know that this busy-ness is
directed toward providing value and achieving
results. If you are a part of a
family owned business that is contemplating
transitioning leadership in the next decade,
there is a program that you can't afford to
miss. Please click here
for details,
or to register. This is just one
example of the high-value, low-cost (in this
case, no-cost) programming you get simply
because of your ABI membership. Of
course, ABI's leading role in public policy is
in a critical phase as members of the Iowa
General Assembly enter the final weeks of the
2009
legislative
session.
When it comes to advancing pro-business
positions and stopping bad-for-business bills,
ABI leads the way. Continue

Foundation continues to have a full plate as is
provides Iowans with some of the best community
development and leadership training available in
Iowa. Continue
reading>>> Finally,
plans are being finalized for ABI's Big Event,
the 106th
Annual ABI
Convention.
This terrific meeting will be held June 9-11 and
will showcase fantastic speakers, great venues
in the Iowa Great Lakes, and simply the very
best in business networking. Continue
