 Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act (HIRE)
 
Danielle Smid            On March 18, 2010, President Obama signed into law the new Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act (HIRE).  The new legislation provides employers with incentives to hire and retain new employees.  To encourage employers to hire new employees, HIRE effectively excuses an employer from paying its share of the Social Security employment taxes (6.2% of the first $106,800 of wages).  This exemption applies to wages paid in 2010 for any new employee hired after February 3, 2010 and before January 1, 2011, if the new employee 1) was previously employed; 2) does not replace another employee of the employer (unless the other employee left voluntarily or for cause); and 3) is not related to the employer and does not own more than 50% of the business either directly or indirectly. ·         Credit for small employers (no more than 25 employees) for health insurance expense.

 

 03/23/2010:

·         Employers with more than 200 full-time employees and that have one or more health plans must automatically enroll new full-time employees in one of the offered plans.  Notice and opportunity to opt out must be provided.

Teen workers learn valuable skills during their summer jobs. Among other things, they learn how to prioritize tasks, how to work with others and how to accept responsibilities. But one more valuable skill you can help them learn is on-the-job safety.

What can you do to help teens enjoy a productive and safe summer working for your organization? OSHA recommends the following guidelines:

1.      Review the worksite to eliminate identified hazards and ensure jobs are as safe as possible.
