ABI Issues Comments to EPA-Hears
Results
The Iowa Association of Business
and Industry commented recently on the EPA's
proposed TMDL for Arsenic on the Mississippi
River and its watershed. The
proposed rule would negatively impact hundreds
of Iowa businesses. ABI was
notified last week the EPA has decided not to go
forth with implementation of the proposed

2010 ABI Conference Filled with
Official
Visits
The 2010 ABI Taking Care of
Business Conference had several highlights
including great speakers from ABI member
companies and other business leaders from all
over the country. In
addition to the great business speakers, ABI was
excited to have Governor
Terry Branstad, fresh off his Primary

ABI Files Amicus Brief with Iowa
Supreme Court
ABI has filed an Amicus Brief with
the Iowa Supreme Court in the case of Griffin
Pipe Products, Inc. v. Board of Review of the
County of Pottawattamie (Supreme Court
No. 09-0032). This case
involves an erroneous assessment of property tax
on machinery used in the manufacturing process
under Iowa Code section
427B.17.
ABI Participates in First PM2.5
Workshop
The
Iowa DNR is hosting a series of workshops
focused on PM2.5 implementation in Iowa. The
first meeting was held on Wednesday, June 9 and
ABI staff was in attendance to understand the
direction of DNR on this very important topic to
ABI members and the state of Iowa. Continue

DNR
to Host Workshop
on Air Quality, Greenhouse Gas and
Efficiency
The DNR will host a workshop on
Wednesday, June 30 in Williamsburg, Iowa. The cost
of the workshop is $29 and focuses on companies
with environmental management systems and ways
to reduce waste. If you

Representative Paul Bell (D-Newton) died on June
7 after a battle with cancer. He
served in the House since 1993 serving on the
Public Safety, Transportation, and

Understanding the Health Care
Surtax
The
recently enacted health care reform legislation,
as currently written, will begin assessing a
health care surtax effective January 1,
2013.
An
additional Medicare tax of 3.8% will be applied
to the lesser of net investment income or the
excess of "modified adjusted gross income"
(MAGI) over the "threshold amount."
The "threshold amounts" are as
follows:
single taxpayers with AGI over $200,000,
joint filers with AGI over $250,000, married
taxpayers filing separately with AGI over
$125,000 and trusts and estates with AGI over
$11,200. Continue

'Leadership
For Iowa Award' Presented to Kirk Tyler
DES MOINES - Kirk
Tyler, president of Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling
Company, Atlantic, was honored with the annual
'Leadership For Iowa Award' on June 9 in Ames.
The award was presented at the Iowa Association
of Business and Industry's (ABI) Annual "Taking
Care of Business Conference" on the occasion of
the Leadership Iowa Class of 2009-10
graduation. Tyler graduated from the
Leadership Iowa (LI) program in 1993. Continue
