Dennis MurdockIt's time to turn up the heat.  That may sound like a strange thing to say in the middle of a hot Iowa summer, but it's true.  Now is the time for the business community to engage in the national debate on energy policy and global warming.

In a mad rush to fix climate change, Congress is on the verge of enacting sweeping new policies to limit greenhouse gas emissions.  There is no question the proposed cap and trade system will increase the cost of living for every single American and increase the cost of business for every American-based company.  The problem lays in that no one can tell us how much.

In a matter of six weeks, House leaders introduced H.R. 2454, better known as the Waxman-Markey climate change bill, ran it through the committee process and brought it to a full vote of the House.  Considering the magnitude of this legislation, more work must be done to fully understand the implications and guard against severe economic impacts.  Now is not the time, in the middle of a national recession, to make it more difficult and much more costly to operate a business.
