IIPAC Investors Growing
In the critical month of July for growing the Iowa Industry PAC, IIPAC Chair Kirk Tyler's letter to friends of ABI has been well received.  Thank you to Eugene Sukup (Sukup Manufacturing Co.); James Kent (Muscatine Foods); Bob Wersen (Interpower); and Cy Chesterman (Chesterman Co.) each joined the list of Gold Level IIPAC Investors ($1,000 or more).  Your help is needed to ensure pro-business candidates are elected to the Iowa legislature. If ABI is going to get back to advocating for a pro-active business agenda, IIPAC must grow through your support.  Invest $100, 250, 500 or even $1000 today. DNR Legislative Stakeholder Meeting Held
The DNR hosted a legislative stakeholder meeting today to receive feedback from interested parties regarding the Department's 2010 policy agenda. ABI was present at the meeting to provide the business perspective to DNR staff and receive insight as to the Department's 2010 goals. If you would like additional information regarding the stakeholder meeting, please contact
Nicole Molt.

New Boiler Inspection Law Improves Safety and Saves Costs

John GillilandAs many new laws passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor went into effect July 1, I was thinking about one particular piece of legislation that didn't grab any headlines and received limited attention in ABI's Legislative News.  It may be one of the most positive pieces of legislation for business passed in 2009.

HF 720 is a bill that will promote safety and save companies hundreds of thousands of dollars.  It wasn't a partisan bill.  It was passed unanimously by both the House and Senate.  The Governor signed it soon after it arrived on his desk. It happened because of the cooperation of Labor Commissioner Dave Neil and his staff at Iowa Workforce Development. As a member of ABI, there are many ways to get involved.  Where you plug in depends on where your passions lie.  Here are ten ways to get involved.

  1. Leadership Iowa - This eight month issues awareness program is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about Iowa's communities, understand better the most pressing issues facing our state and cultivate life-long relationships with other Iowa business leaders.  You may self nominate any time.  The new class will be selected soon and sessions begin in October. See where Leadership Iowa will travel this year.
  2. Prosperity Project - All ABI members have access to a wonderful voter education tool called the Prosperity Project.  This non-partisan website helps communicate legislator voting records, key bills and other legislative news to ABI members.  Last year over 2500 members contacted their legislators by simply entering their zip code. Take a peek at last year's voting records. Continue reading for rest of the list>>>
