The Value of Social Media From an Association Executive

As I travel the state speaking with business executives from a variety of industries, one of the things I ask is whether or not they have a social media presence.  Sometimes I hear that one or two people within the organization are on Linked In or that they have one young person in their marketing department who tweets, but the resounding response is. . . "Who's got time for that stuff?  I'm busy throughout the day and couldn't care less who's going to Starbuck's for coffee or what my hairdresser had for lunch."  There are instances, however in which I see tremendous value in the effort exerted around social media. 
 
ABI has seen three great pay-offs in our social media presence.  The first is immediate access to information.  All media outlets worth their salt have a very dynamic and quick reacting social media presence.  Often the first place to hear about breaking news is through social media.  Have you ever been driving to work or across state and found yourself in traffic that just isn't moving?  I bet you if you logged into Twitter, you would find three or four tweets explaining the issue.  A more business related outcome, however in gathering information about the opposition. It is a great way to keep tabs on the competition.  There are many tools available through Twitter to align you with those who have similar interests.  It is a great way to stay one step ahead of opposing forces.
